Dear
Gina:
As you
may know, I am a candidate for a seat on the Loudoun County School Board from
the Leesburg District. I received your
questionnaire, and frankly, I don't think I understand the cost ramifications
of the various proposals contained within, which makes it difficult for me to
respond. I did not look at all the
sources, suggested, as I suspect they already have a point-of-view that
whatever the cost, the goal is worth the expense. Let me just say, however, I am open to the concept of "green
schools" and don't oppose it in the principle. I just don't feel I have heard enough regarding costs.
LCPS
has increasing costs to contend with in the construction of new schools and the
associated expenses to support those schools.
My focus has to be there, and additionally, I want teacher salaries to
remain competitive and I want financial incentives available to retain good
teachers, through the development of
plans for a supplemental retirement system, and help with affordable
housing.
I did
hear a presentation on the environmentally sensitive area on which the new
Leesburg HS will be built, on North King Street. I do support those efforts to protect the trout streams and the
educational opportunities afforded high school students to study ecology in
their "back yard".
